The Vigilant Hose Company was founded on February 22, 1843.  Since that time we have grown and evolved into a very progressive fire department specializing in Fire, Rescue and EMS operations.  The Vigilant Hose Company is one of three fire departments located in the Borough of Shippensburg.  Along with Cumberland Valley Hose Co and West End Fire Rescue we combine to make up Taskforce 4.

We currently have 2 engines, a tanker, brush and traffic unit.  We provide Fire and EMS services to The Borough of Shippensburg, Shippensburg Township, Shippensburg University, Southampton Township, South Newton Township in Cumberland County as well as, Southampton Township in Franklin County.

All Fire and Emergency Operations and Fire Prevention Activities for the Vigilant Hose are managed by our Fire Chief Clyde Tinner, and all administrative tasks are supervised by our President Daniel Byers.

The membership of our department is divided up into 3 categories: Active, Honorary and Life Members.  Active Members work under the supervision of our officers to mitigate all emergency situations, Honorary Membership is a social membership that does not normally run calls but usually helps out with fundraising and administrative tasks.  Life membership is only given to Active members when they are 40 and have completed 20 years of service to the company.
